Fleece shorts, not gym shorts
The fabric is the difference. These use the same weight as the sweatpants, which means they hold a shape and do not cling when it gets warm. They are built for wearing out rather than for training, and the weight is why they photograph better than a thin pair.
The length question
They sit above the knee, which is shorter than a basketball short and longer than a running short. That length is deliberate and it is the reason they work with a boxy tee. Anything longer would fight the proportions of the tops in this range.
