Layers, Not Winter Coats

Setting expectations properly matters here more than on any other page in the range. Essentials outerwear is designed to go over a hoodie, not instead of one. These are shells, coach jackets and lighter styles rather than insulated winter coats.

That is a design decision rather than a gap in the line. The brand is built around layering: a tee, a hoodie, a jacket over the top, each cut to sit over the last without bunching. A heavy padded coat would break that system, because you cannot layer under something already thick.

So if you want one piece to survive a British January on its own, this is not the category for it. If you want the jacket that finishes an Essentials fit and takes you through autumn and spring, it is exactly right.

The Sizing Question Nobody Asks Until Too Late

Every other item in the Essentials range is cut oversized, and people learn to size down. Then they apply the same logic to a jacket and end up with something that will not close over a hoodie.

Do not size down here. The outerwear is cut with layering room already built in, calculated on the assumption that an Essentials hoodie is going underneath. Take your usual size and it works. Take one below and you have a jacket that only fits over a t-shirt, which defeats the purpose of buying it.

Where They Sit in a Fit

The palette does the work. Essentials outerwear stays within the same muted band as everything else, which means a jacket from here goes over any hoodie in the hoodie range without a clash.

The approach that looks best is tonal rather than contrasting. A sand jacket over an oatmeal hoodie, or black over off black, reads more considered than a hard contrast does. That layering of near-identical neutrals is the specific thing that makes Essentials look more expensive than it is, and outerwear is where it shows most.

Care

Check the label first, because this category mixes fabrics in a way the rest of the range does not. Cotton and fleece pieces wash cold at thirty degrees, inside out. Shell and technical fabrics need a gentle cycle and no softener at all, since softener coats the surface and kills any water resistance.

Nothing in this category goes in a tumble dryer. Heat damages shell coatings and lifts the rubberised logo on the cotton pieces. Hang everything to dry on a wide hanger, and hang rather than fold for storage so the shoulders keep their shape.
