What Pigment Dyeing Actually Does

A lot of the tees here are described as pigment dyed, and it is worth understanding why that matters before you buy. Standard dyeing bonds colour into the fibre. Pigment dyeing sits the colour on the surface of the cotton instead, then washes the garment afterwards.

The result is a tee that arrives already softened, with a slightly uneven, faded tone rather than a flat block of colour. It looks worn before you have worn it. Over time the surface pigment keeps fading gently at the seams and folds, so the shirt develops rather than degrades. It is the opposite of a cheap tee, which starts bright and then looks tired.

One consequence to know about: pigment dyed pieces lose a little colour in the first couple of washes. That is the process working, not a fault. Wash them separately the first two times.

The Graphics, Line by Line

Stussy 8 Ball T-Shirt

The 8 Ball is the most recognised graphic Stussy has, and it runs deeper here than any other line at seven colourways. It comes from pool hall and skate iconography rather than anything designed in a studio, which is why it has stayed relevant for decades without being redrawn. The black pigment dyed version is the one most people want. Brown, green, navy, red, white and yellow follow it. If you prefer the motif with more going on around it, the Galaxy 8 Ball sets it against a printed space background.

Stussy Dice T-Shirt

Dice sit alongside the 8 Ball in the same visual family, drawn from the same gambling and pool hall imagery the brand has always borrowed from. The Fuzzy Dice tees carry the hanging-mirror version rather than plain dice, which ties them to lowrider and car culture as much as skating. The red version is the strongest of the four, with the graphic reading clearly against the base. Black, white and navy complete the run. This is the pick if you want something recognisably Stussy that is not the 8 Ball everyone else is wearing.

Skull Wings and Skate Posse

These two lean hardest into the skate half of the brand's history. Skull Wings is the darker artwork in the range, and the pigment dyeing suits it particularly well because the faded finish stops the graphic looking like a printed novelty tee. The black Skull Wings is the standard, with purple and white also stocked. Skate Posse references the crews that carried Stussy through the late 1980s, and comes in black and purple. Both are pigment dyed, so expect the softened tone straight out of the packaging.

House of Cards, Flipped and Popsicle

The lighter end of the graphic range. House of Cards runs a playing card motif across three colours, with the red version the boldest. Flipped inverts the signature logo, which reads as a subtle in-joke rather than a loud print, and comes in black, cream, purple and white. Popsicle is the most playful of the three. These are the tees to reach for when you want colour without a heavy graphic dominating the fit, and they layer well under an open shirt or hoodie.

Plain Cotton Tees

Not every Stussy tee needs artwork. The cotton range carries the handwritten signature alone, usually small on the chest, and nothing else. Six styles cover black, white and green. These are the ones that last longest in a wardrobe because there is no graphic to date, and they work as a base layer under the varsity jackets and crewnecks in the rest of the collection. The white cotton tee is the most useful single piece in the whole t-shirt range.

Stussy Football Jerseys

The football shirt has moved a long way from the terraces. Over the last few years it has become a genuine streetwear staple, worn as a normal top rather than matchday kit, and Stussy's version is one of the reasons the crossover worked at all. It sits in the t-shirt range because that is what it is: a short sleeve top you wear with jeans.

The build is what separates it from a printed tee. Polyester mesh rather than cotton, so it breathes properly in heat and dries fast. A ribbed V neck collar instead of a crew. Lettering and numbering applied across the front and back in the traditional kit layout. The Stussy Football Jersey in black is the easier of the two to wear and the one that goes with most things already in a Stussy wardrobe.

The white jersey shows the applied lettering with far more contrast, which is the point if you want the kit reference to read clearly. It is harder to keep clean, so it suits summer wear more than daily rotation. Both cut loose and short like the rest of the range. Layer either over a long sleeve tee when it cools down, which is how most people wear a jersey outside of summer.

Sizing

Stussy uses US sizing and cuts tees boxy: wide through the chest, short in the body, with the shoulder seam sitting past the shoulder. A Stussy medium wears wider and shorter than a UK medium from most high street brands.

Order your usual size for the intended fit. Size up if you are tall or want the hem to sit lower, because the length is where people most often get caught out. Heavier cotton means the tee holds its shape rather than clinging, so a boxy fit reads intentional rather than baggy. The football jerseys follow the same sizing but run slightly looser again through the body, as kit shapes always do.

Washing a Pigment Dyed Tee

Wash the first two cycles separately, because surface pigment releases early on and can transfer. After that, cold water at 30 degrees, inside out, with similar colours. Skip bleach entirely and skip softener, which coats the cotton and dulls the faded finish you paid for.

Air dry rather than tumble. Heat shrinks a boxy pattern where you notice it most, in the length, and it hardens screen prints until they crack. Iron on the reverse only and never directly across a graphic. Mesh jerseys need the same cold, gentle treatment, and must never be ironed at all, as polyester mesh melts under a hot plate. Treated this way a pigment dyed tee keeps improving for years.
