What Essentials Actually Is

Essentials is not a standalone brand and understanding that explains everything about how it is priced and cut. It is the diffusion line of Fear of God, the label Jerry Lorenzo founded in 2013, and it launched in 2018 to do a specific job: put the Fear of God silhouette within reach of people who were never going to spend main-line money.

Vogue called it a competitively priced sister label, which is accurate and slightly understates it. Fear of God main line sits alongside luxury pricing. Essentials sits closer to premium high street. The design language, the oversized proportions, the muted palette and the restraint are shared. What changes is the fabric spend and the production scale.

Lorenzo came up through a background in event production and baseball rather than fashion school, and it shows in the clothes. Essentials is built on quiet staples with the branding kept small and the fit doing the work, which is the opposite of how most streetwear operates. That restraint is why it crossed over so far beyond streetwear buyers.

Essentials Hoodies

The piece the whole line turns on, and our deepest category at fifty-four styles. Essentials Tracksuits

Matched sets, and the second biggest search category the brand has. The Waffle Henley Rugby line is the distinctive one, using a textured waffle knit and a buttoned henley placket rather than a plain crew, in sand, sycamore, off black and yellow. Essentials T-Shirts

Thirty tees, and the cheapest way into the brand. The same oversized boxy pattern as the hoodies with the logo kept small on the chest, which makes them the pieces that layer under everything else in the range. Muted neutrals dominate rather than brights. These are the items people buy in threes once they know their size.

Essentials Shorts and Joggers

Thirty-six shorts and twenty-one joggers, covering the bottom half of most Essentials fits. Both run relaxed with an elasticated drawcord waist and the same small logo placement as the tops. Joggers pair naturally with the hoodies for a set built at your own pace, and the shorts do the same job through summer. Grey and black lead on both.

Essentials Jackets

Seventeen outerwear pieces, mostly lighter layers rather than heavy winter coats. Coach jackets, shells and lightweight styles built to sit over a hoodie rather than replace one. Cut with the same relaxed proportions as the rest of the line, so a hoodie underneath is accounted for at your usual size.

Real or Fake: Two Checks That Settle It

Essentials is the most counterfeited brand in streetwear, largely because it is the most bought. Two checks catch the overwhelming majority of fakes without needing any expertise.

First, weight. Genuine Essentials fleece is heavyweight cotton with real substance. Pick up a fake and it feels thin and light straight away, because fabric is the easiest place to cut cost. Second, the logo. On the real thing the chest branding is a raised rubberised appliqué with edges you can feel under a thumb. Counterfeits print it flat, and it sits on the surface rather than standing off it.

Sizing Across the Range

Essentials is cut oversized on purpose. Tops run wide through the body with dropped shoulders and a slightly shorter length than the width implies. That makes them true to size within their own template rather than against a high street equivalent, so a medium here wears considerably bigger than a medium elsewhere.

Order your usual size for the intended look. Size down one if you want something closer to a conventional fit, and take the smaller option if you are between sizes. Bottoms follow the same relaxed logic but the drawcord waist gives more room to adjust, so sizing is more forgiving there than on the tops.
