The Denim Tears The Cotton Wreath Hoodie Black is the definitive piece from the label. If you buy one thing from Denim Tears, this is the one that carries the whole idea.
The wreath, and why it exists
Tremaine Emory launched Denim Tears in 2019 with a first collection timed to the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans being brought to America. The cotton wreath motif references the crop that built the country's wealth and the people forced to harvest it. Emory has called it a talisman for America. It is a piece of design meant to sit with you rather than flatter you.
Why black rather than a colour
The wreath on black reads as a mark rather than a print. It holds the seriousness of the reference in a way the brighter colourways do not, and it makes the hoodie wearable across seasons and settings. This is the version that ends up in most wardrobes for good reason.
