The signature is the whole design

Shawn Stussy scrawled his own handwriting onto surfboards in Laguna Beach around 1980. The boards outsold the surfboard business, and by 1984 it was a clothing label. That signature has not been redrawn since, which is why it does not date the way a styled wordmark does. It is one man's handwriting rather than a designed logo.

Left chest, not centre

The placement matters more than people expect. A small left-chest mark sits under an open shirt or jacket without disappearing, and it reads as a garment rather than as merchandise. This is the Stussy tee you can wear somewhere a large graphic would not work.

Fit and sizing

• Boxy through the chest with a short body, cut to the same 1990s pattern as the hoodies

Wearing it

Straight or wide denim, plain trainers. Because the mark is small this works as a base layer under an overshirt, which the larger-print Stussy tees do not.

• Cold wash at 30 degrees, inside out, with darks
• Hang dry rather than tumble, since Stussy cotton shrinks with heat
• Iron the reverse only
• No bleach and no fabric softener
